Turmeric Curcumin

 

Turmeric, a plant belonging to the ginger family, is most commonly known as the main spice in curry. Its bitter taste, beautiful color, and warm fragrance has been popular with foodies for years. Less commonly known is Turmerics role in natural medicine. Curcumin, a chemical found in Turmeric, has been said to been used to treat gastroinstesinal ailments, painful skin conditions, and joints. Curcumin also stops platelets from clumping together to form blood clots.

According to Dr. Weil MD, a holistic health professional, "Turmeric contains more than two dozen anti-inflammatory compounds, including six different COX-2-inhibitors (the COX-2 enzyme promotes pain, swelling and inflammation; inhibitors selectively block that enzyme)." 

Turmeric is also jam packed with anti-oxidants, anti-oxidants are said to provide the additional benefit of fighting free-radicals. Free-radicals are atoms with an additional electron. Electrons need a mate, so having an unpaired electron out there can really reek havoc in the cellular membrane ultimately causing poor funtionality in cells and possibly cell mutation. Anti-oxidants prevent cellular damage.
